Pedrosa confident on Bridgestone tyres

Pedrosa confident on Bridgestone tyres

Dani Pedrosa is confident that he and the HRC factory Honda squad can make progress on their Bridgestone tyres at Indianapolis this weekend, following the Spaniard's shock switch from Michelin after the San Marino Grand Prix.

But the 22-year-old, who set the fastest time on the Japanese rubber when he tested the tyres at Misano last week, admitted it will take time to adjust.

"We started slowly and finally we got improvements over the others," he said.

"For our first test it was nice to have some hours to try and a lot of work of course. But you know I was happy and finally we had a good test.

"Of course when we changed the tyres immediately I felt we must work to adapt to these tyres and we have to find the best combination, and right now with this new track it is also another thing so I just try to enjoy this weekend here."

    Hayden hints at Ducati deal

Nicky Hayden has given a firm hint that his future lies outside the Repsol Honda team, saying it is time for a change.

The American has endured two disappointing seasons since winning the title back in 2006, being overshadowed by teammate Dani Pedrosa.

Hayden is currently in 11th position in the championship and he has not stood on the podium all season long.

His contract expires at the end of this year and he has been in talks with Ducati to ride alongside Casey Stoner next season, especially since Marco Melandri was confirmed at Kawasaki.

"This is the time to change: I need to do something different," Hayden was quoted as saying by Motosprint magazine. "I can't say too many things now, but there will be an official announcement very soon.

"I really want to feel again like a teammate, I mean to be in a team where everyone works in the same direction and shares information. I can't wait for that moment to come.

"I have a lot of respect for Casey, for the way he's grown as a rider and the way he does his job. He minds his own business and lets his results do the talking. I'll have no problem with him."

He added: "The bike (Ducati) has great potential because of its engine and its power. Casey rides it very well, he's strong, and deserves great consideration for it. But I don't want to talk too much before trying it myself.

"I don't think the bike's characteristics are part of my new challenge: I just want to start getting good results again."

Hayden, whose teammate Pedrosa made a shock switch to Bridgestone tyres after the last race, said he was never in a position to do the same, but he claimed he was not surprised by the Spaniard's move.

"I've never been put in the conditions to choose. Once they told me that I would have just wasted my time had I even only thought about asking for Bridgestone tyres.

"But I'm not surprised they've given them to him. Besides, at Misano I didn't even have the same fork Dani had... No way would I think they'd let me try the new tyres.

"Honestly it was a shock at the beginning for me. I thought something like this would never happen, instead it has... There was a time when I thought of Bridgestones too, but I was told that's a decision for Honda to make, and that in any case there was no chance for me to have those tyres."

Spies promises there's more to come

Suzuki's rookie sensation Ben Spies says there is more to come from him after a promising first day's practice for the Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP.

The 24-year-old from Tennessee, who has been entered by Suzuki as wild card rider for the two American races and subbed for Loris Capirossi at Donington, ended the day fifth fastest overall, less than a second slower than teammate Chris Vermeulen.

"It was good today and we're quite pleased with how it went," said the reigning AMA Superbike champion. "We finished both sessions early because it was so wet we weren't going to make any difference.

"They were both good sessions for us though and although the track was a bit awkward in places - because the water was laying on the surface - and it made it difficult in parts.

"I know I still had a bit in reserve and if the conditions are the same tomorrow I am sure I can go a good bit quicker!"

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa says he is aiming to win races again this year after his surprising switch to Bridgestone tyres.

The Spaniard's team announced last weekend that he would start using the Japanese rubber right after the San Marino Grand Prix after agreeing to part ways with Michelin.

Pedrosa lost no time in beginning his acclimatisation to the new tyres and he already tested with Bridgestone on Monday at Misano.

The Honda rider, who also tested Honda's pneumatic valve engine, set a best time of 1:34.652, the fastest of the day, less than three tenths of a second slower than his qualifying best last weekend.

Pedrosa was left encouraged by his performance and he admitted he is determined to fight for victory again this season.

"I'm happy starting this new challenge and I would like to thank Bridgestone," said Pedrosa. "Today we also made an important step forward in developing the 2009 bike, but now my first priority is to be fully competitive again.

"Of course, there is a lot of work to do but I am determined to win again this year. Today we worked hard on bike set-up. The feeling with the new tyres on my RC212V is different, both for settings and for riding style, but I just tried to follow my feelings and adjust the set-up accordingly.

"Today was only the first day of this new challenge but I am happy.

"I also tested the pneumatic-valve engine. The engine character is different, the power delivery is a bit more aggressive, but the engine has some good points.

"I have no experience on this latest bike, so I had to test many new things today. This has been an important test. Now we will analyse all the data and we look forward to the next race at Indianapolis."

Pedrosa set his best time with the pneumatic valve engine and finished nearly a second ahead of Shinya Nakano.

Gresini re-signs de Angelis for '09

Gresini re-signs de Angelis for 09

Alex de Angelis will remain in MotoGP next year after re-signing with the Gresini Honda team.

The Italian team' decision to exercise their option on the second year of de Angelis' contract comes after a promising debut season in the premier class for the San Marinese rider, in which he has twice finished fourth.

Prior to this season, he twice finished third in the 250cc class - taking his sole class win at Valencia in 2006 - and was Dani Pedrosa's closest rival for the 125cc title in 2003.

Fellow Gresini rider Shinya Nakano has been on a factory-spec Honda RCV212V since the Czech Grand Prix last month. Honda have not confirmed whether or not de Angelis will now be given similar machinery before the end of the season.

Casey Stoner said his second consecutive race-ending crash was caused by a lack of grip from his Ducati's front tyre.

Just as he had at Brno a fortnight ago, Stoner fell while leading from Valentino Rossi in today's race. With Rossi going on to take a comfortable win, Stoner is now 75 points adrift in the championship.

He had shown dominant form until the race, having topped all the practice sessions and taken his seventh successive pole position.

"It is very disappointing for the weekend to end like this after showing such a high level of performance in practice," said Stoner.

"Basically we took the decision to put one lap on the race tyre in warm-up this morning to get it scrubbed in: we've done it before and not had a problem but today I could feel from the first lap that the grip wasn't right.

"After a few laps it started to feel better and I was gaining confidence but it let go."

The Australian is confident that he can bounce back from this string of errors.

"It's a real shame but, anyway, we tried hard here and once again I think we've shown we are very fast, we have a great bike and tyres that work fantastically," Stoner said. "This gives me confidence for next year and I'm looking forward to it already."

His Misano weekend was complicated when he aggravated a previous wrist fracture before practice - a problem that he won't be able to fully resolve until after the championship is over.

"It's huge disappointment this problem came out but I'll have to wait until the end of the season for an operation," Stoner said.
