Lorenzo to have skin graft on hand

Jorge Lorenzo will need a skin graft following his heavy crash during practice for the Catalan Grand Prix last Friday.

The Spaniard was forced to miss the Barcelona race after sustaining head trauma and damage to his right hand when he crashed heavily near the end of a lap during practice.

Since the accident, Lorenzo has been recovering at the Institut Dexues in Barcelona, where Doctor Xavier Mir confirmed the Yamaha rider is progressing well.

The Spaniard, however, will need a mall skin graft to replace skin lost on his right hand.

"After further observation we are pleased to say that the cranial trauma that Jorge suffered on Friday has improved without any further complications," said Dr Mir.

"This still needs to be verified with another CAT scan, however, and for this reason we have moved Jorge to another part of the hospital this afternoon.

"Regarding other injuries, we have evaluated the abrasion on his right hand and we can confirm that he has more than two centimetres of skin missing from his fourth finger.

"For this reason we have decided that it will be necessary to make a skin graft, which will probably take place tomorrow morning (Monday)."

Lorenzo's presence at the British Grand Prix next week remains in doubt, although his team were optimistic he would be fit for the Donington race.
